Michelle Obama unveils student poet program

Here’s a sign that poetry is back in national awareness in a way it hasn’t been in perhaps decades.

The National Student Poets program has been created by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities and the Institute of Museum and Library Services through a partnership with the nonprofit group, the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.

The program will select five students each year to serve as literary ambassadors in their communities and encourage kids to develop writing and creative skills.

First Lady Michelle Obama is honorary chair of the program, which was launched today.
