Featured Poets in Videos

In the last couple of weeks we’ve found three videos of poets talking about poetry that we are sure you will enjoy. Two are of poets who will be featured at our May Festival — Sharon Olds and Yusef Komunyakaa. The third video is with Martin Espada, who has been a  featured poets at an earlier Festival.

Sharon Olds recently won the T.S. Eliot Prize, the first American woman to win the honor. The award is presented by the Poetry Book Society (founded in the UK by Eliot ) to “the best collection of new verse in English.” The prize has been previously won by poets as diverse as Anne Carson, Les Murray,  Mark Doty (last year’s feature poet), and Seamus Heaney. Olds won for her book Stag’s Leap, a series of poems about her divorce.  In this two and a half minute video from The Guardian she talks about the book: Yusef Komunyakaa

A a four minute video called “Fearless Laughter,” Yusef Komunyakaa gives some wonderful advice to writers. In addition to winning the Pulitzer Prize for poetry, Komunyakaa  is currently a professor in the Creative Writing Program at New York University.

Martin Espada 2And last but not least is a wonderful interview with Martin Espada on the Bill Moyers show. In this 30 minute video Espada joins Bill to read from his work and talk about the poetry’s unique power to capture ideas, including Espada’s own perspectives on President Obama and Frederick Douglass.
